What are excise duties?
Excise duty is a form of indirect tax levied on the sale of specific goods, such as alcohol, tobacco and fuel. This tax increases the cost price of these products and is usually levied per unit of the product, not based on its value.
Through excise duties, the government tries to discourage the consumption of certain goods, while at the same time it constitutes an important source of income.
