What is the AEX Index?
The AEX index (Amsterdam Exchanges index) is a major stock index that reflects the performance of the most traded Dutch shares on Euronext. This index serves as the main indicator of the Dutch stock market. It is a price index, which means that dividends are not included in the calculations. The AEX index is calculated continuously and revised annually on the third Friday of March at the close of trading.
Historically, the index consisted of 25 funds, but today the index contains fourteen funds. The composition of the index is determined by the market capitalization of the freely tradable shares ('free float'). Companies with a lower free float or price can be transferred to the AEX Midkap Index.
Example: In May 2024, the AEX index closed above 900 points for the first time, representing a record high.
